According to Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2012, about 99% of the newly discovered mobile malicious programs are targeted towards Android users. Besides that, only a very small amount of malicious software are targeted towards Java and Symbian smartphones.
The majority of Android malwares can be divided into three main groups: 'SMS Trojans', Backdoors and Spyware. according to their functionality. SMS Trojan drain victims' mobile accounts by sending SMS text to premium-rate numbers. Backdoors, however, provides unauthorized access to users' mobile device making it possible to install more malicious programs. Finally, Spyware targets unauthorized collection of private data such as passwords.
One of the main causes for this statistic is caused by Android allowance of software installation from untrusted sources. However, malware on the official Google Play application distribution platform is another trend that started in 2011 and continued in 2012 despite Google's best efforts to reduce cybercriminal activity.
